Sanliurfa

 

Sanliurfa is famous as the city of Edessa during the Mesopotamian period, is situated on the exact trade routes between Europe, Asia and Africa. Sanliurfa has been seen the important historical movement and the great works in Turkey's history including Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Alexander.

According to the Jewish and Islamic tradition, Sanliurfa is said to be the birthplace of the prophet Abraham, who was only burned alive by King Nimrod, and the God to turn the fire into water. This legendary area is now known to be in the courtyard of Halil-ur-Rahman Mosque, a calm pool encircled by attractively carved walls and the minaret of the mosque. Since this pool includes so many fishes, it is called in Turkish as Balikligol (lake with fish).
