Turkey is among the leading countries in Hydropower Generation in the world. According to the Turkish Electricity Transmission Company, Turkey is among the top 10 countries in the world in terms of electricity generation through hydropower plants.
Turkey was among the top 10 countries with the highest capacity in the field of Hydropower Generation in the world with its hydroelectric capacity of 2,500 megawatts, which it commissioned in 2020. As of the end of July 2021, Turkey's hydroelectric installed power reached 31,436 megawatts.
According to the International Hydropower Organization (IHA), Turkey ranked 2nd in the world after China in the last year with 2,500 megawatts of new capacity.
Turkey also ranks ninth in the world after Norway and above France in terms of hydropower generation capacity.

Turkey's first hydroelectric power plant was built in 1902 in the Tarsus of Mersin city.
Turkey's electricity generation capacity by the end of July this year was 98,264 MW, of which about 52,000 MW will be generated through renewable sources.
The major share of energy production from renewable sources in Turkey belongs to electricity generation through hydropower plants. Accordingly, 32% of the total electricity generation and 60% of electricity generation from renewable sources in Turkey is related to hydropower plants. Turkey currently has 735 active hydropower plants.
