Ataturk Airport Becomes
Istanbul National Park

The Istanbul Ataturk National Park is a large-scale city park project, which was built on the site of Ataturk Airport as the world's 5th largest park. 

It is awaiting to become a magnificent tourist point. Ataturk Airport was a major international airport before the construction of the New Istanbul Airport.

Pursuant to the plan announced by the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum recently, Ataturk Airport will be made as the biggest national park in Turkey.



Istanbul Ataturk Airport Covers an area of 8.5 million square meters of which 30% will be used for general aviation and 9 percent for military flights and the remaining part is dedicated to the Istanbul National Park.

145 thousand 300 trees will be planted in an area of 5 million 61 thousand square meters in Ataturk Airport National Park. The trees will be 40 to 50 years old trees.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the sapling planting ceremony of Ataturk Airport National Park, which will be the largest park in Turkey and the 5th largest in the world, as part of the celebrations of the 569th anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul.


The Attraction, Events and Public Living Spaces of Ataturk Airport National Park


Ataturk Airport National Park will become a landmark of Istanbul like the Central Park in New York and Hyde Park in London. It is stated that once it opens more than 1 million people will visit the Istanbul national park.

Approximately 132,500 trees will be planted on an area of 5.2 million square meters in Ataturk Airport National Park. 2.1 million Square meters of land will be dedicated to “living areas” such as parks, playgrounds, skating tracks, activity zones, restaurants and cafes.



A museum and youth center will be established on 1.1 million square meters of land, including an aviation center, cinema, sports and exhibition halls.

Outdoor football fields, tennis courts and archery fields will be built on a land of approximately 393,000 square meters. The existing international flight area will host expos and fairs as it has a metro connection, and lots of accommodation facilities will be constructed on an area of approximately 230,000 square meters.

While planning the Ataturk Airport National Park everything was considered to the finest details. There will be an elderly care center on an area of 180 thousand square meters. The National Park will have access to the Marmara Sea with the 885-meter-long pier.
